Window AC versus ductless air conditioners

HOME

Window air conditioners are measured by a simpler calculation of SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio. A new window unit with an SEER of 9.5 or more used to be  considered efficient. Now 13 seer is the standard in Canada.

Keep in mind that the SEER can vary greatly between air conditioning models, so be sure to read the air conditioners Energy Guide label carefully before purchasing. The SEER is the largest number printed on the label; you can also check the annual operating costs of your A C system and how it compares to other brands.

Sizing Air conditioners
The same sizing principle applies to window air conditioners and ductless systems - smaller is actually better. Don't let a salesperson talk you into buying a larger air conditioner unit than you need. Check the package to see how many square feet of living space the air conditioner unit is designed to cool.

Other features to look for include:

Air conditioning Sleep settings
Air conditioners Filter alerts
Air conditioning Remote controls
Energy-saver options
24-hour air conditioner timers
Easy-clean air conditioning  filters
Noise insulation

Window air conditioners should also be installed in a shady area – placing one on the south or sunny side of the house will make the air conditioner work harder than necessary.
